Let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action ~ 1John 3:18

Cloak of Pain, Coat of Shame

by Udo Strutynski

Cloak of pain, coat of shame:
warm me,
encumber me,
mark me,
conceal me.

Cloak of pain, coat of shame:
make me sweat,
drag me down,
then shave my head;
now I'm your clown.

Cloak of pain, coat of shame:
are not gifts that friends
out of kindness made;
but in wearing them,
their price is paid.

Cloak of pain, coat of shame:
whose function is
to set the blame;
deserved or not,
the guilt's the same.

Cloak of pain and coat of shame
are synonyms,
entombing me,
for the Nessos Shirt
consuming me.
